Jena Gaines was born and raised in Newport, Rhode Island. She attended Mount Holyoke College and Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts, where she majored in cultural anthropology. She earned her Master's and doctoral degrees in modern European history from the University of Virginia. She taught undergraduate and graduate history courses before becoming a freelance writer and editor. Her articles and book reviews have appeared in Slavery and Abolition, Canadian Review of Studies in Nationalism, Contemporary European History, and French Politics and Society. She is also the author of a book on Haitians in North America.
