Writer's Resources

The Official Web Site For Diana Hacker
Diana Hacker, author of four best-selling handbooks, was a professor of English at Prince George's Community College in Maryland for over thirty years. Thoroughly class-tested and based on the author's experience working with students, Hacker handbooks are popular because they work as references that students can and do use on their own.

MLA Style: English And Other Humanities
In English and in some humanities classes, you will be asked to use the MLA (Modern Language Association) system for documenting sources, which is set forth in the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th ed. (New York: MLA, 2003). MLA recommends in-text citations that refer readers to a list of works cited.

APA Style: The Social Sciences
In most social science classes, you will be asked to use the APA (American Psychological Association) system for documenting sources, which is set forth in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed. (Washington: APA, 2001). APA recommends in-text citations that refer readers to a list of references.

Chicago Documentation Style
Professors in history and some humanities courses often require footnotes or endnotes based on The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed. (Chicago: U of Chicago P, 2003). When you use Chicago-style notes, you usually will be asked to include a bibliography at the end of your paper.

CSE Style: Biology and Other Sciences
Though scientific publications document sources in similar ways, the details of presenting source information vary from journal to journal. Often, publications provide prospective authors with style sheets that outline formats for presenting sources. Before submitting an article to a scientific publication, you should request its style sheet. If one is not available, examine a copy of the publication to see how sources are listed. When writing for a science course, check with your instructor about which format to use.
